“[Hagar] gave this name to the LORD who spoke to her: “You are the God who sees me,” for she said, “I have now seen the One who sees me” (Genesis 16:13).
Have you ever seen a diamond that wasn’t set in a piece of jewelry? It is incredibly small. Therefore my heart sank when I noticed the diamond was missing from my wedding ring one Sunday afternoon.
Taking apart the drain of the bathroom sink and searching the house at night with a flashlight proved fruitless. Monday morning found me back at church on my hands and knees searching for the tiny stone. It was a hopeless exercise, but a necessary one.
Convinced of the futility of searching, I didn’t mention it to the church custodian, but someone else did. He told me later, “My vacuum collects all the dirt in a clear plastic container, so I thought I might as well dump it out on a sheet of plastic and have a look. And there it was.”
I was humbled and amazed at the grace of God. Though the diamond was incredibly valuable to me, I assumed God wouldn’t be concerned with it since it was a material possession. Perhaps He wasn’t, but He did care about me.
Though I didn’t have a clue, God saw the diamond fall and knew exactly where it was. Was it a lesson on faith? Did God just want to surprise and delight me? Did He want to shake my erroneous notions of Him? Maybe it was all of the above or something else completely.
One thing, I know: God sees.
If He sees a pebble of no eternal value, how much more does He see me?
“Are not two sparrows sold for a penny? Yet not one of them will fall to the ground apart from the will of your Father. And even the very hairs of your head are all numbered. So don’t be afraid; you are worth more than many sparrows” (Matthew 10:29 – 31).
God sees you. He knows your heart. He hears your cry for help.
Holy God, thank you that You are the One who sees. Increase my faith and help me to believe that You care about my life and You hear me in my distress.
